Research focus
An essential and profile-forming research focus of the Faculty of Law at Viadrina is the law of the European Union and international law in the broader sense. The Frankfurt Institute for European Union Law (fireu) is a particular expression of this focus.
In research and teaching, the Faculty has also long contributed to the focus on digitalisation, which was institutionalised across all faculties with the founding of the European New School of Digital Studies (ENS) at Viadrina. These include projects on artificial intelligence in law, legal tech, online dispute resolution and the research centre for digital law. There are also research interests in the areas of intellectual property and IT law as well as digitalisation and labour law and projects on digital ethics and compliance.
The Faculty's German-Polish profile is primarily realised through the three Professorships of Polish Civil Law, Public Law and Criminal Law and their research activities, which are based at the Collegium Polonicum. In 2023 and 2024, joint research symposia were also organised with the Faculty of Law and Administration at Adam Mickiewicz University (Poznań). There is also cooperation with partners from other countries as part of the European University Alliance European Reform University Alliance (ERUA).
.
Interdisciplinary research is carried out in the Faculty of Law in areas such as digital law, agricultural law, environmental law, labour and social law, private international law and cross-border cooperation, mediation and Conflict Management as well as compliance.
